Double award honour for animation graduates

Creative graduates Birmingham City University have received a double honour at this year’s Royal Television Society’s Midlands Centre awards.

 

Rizwan Khan, from Edgbaston, was named winner in the Student Animation category for his film ‘Chime’ – an animated short film about a man who lives inside a clock. Fellow animation student Michael Price was also shortlisted for his stop-motion film ‘Oh Well’.

Man gets suspended jail term for fraud

A man who falsely claimed £15,000 in benefits despite the fact that he lived in a house he owned in Coventry has been given a suspended jail sentence.

 

Sivasubramanian Srithar, 53, was claiming housing and council tax benefit at a house in Bye Way, Harrow between January 2004 and March 2011.

 

But checks in 2011 through a new data-matching system showed he was paying a mortgage on a property in Beake Avenue, Coventry.

British Transport Police (BTP) officers are appealing for information after items worth £450 were stolen from the Boots store at Birmingham New Street rail station.

 

Investigators have today released CCTV images of two people they would like to speak to in connection with the incident, which took place on Saturday, 16 November.

200 years behind bars for Birmingham based drugs gang

A sophisticated drugs gang have been jailed for more than 200 years after a complex police investigation smashed their operation.

The final seven criminals were sent to prison yesterday (18 December) during a hearing at Birmingham Crown Court after police recovered more than £3 million of heroin.

 

Over a three year period detectives also uncovered two firearms and hundreds of thousands of pounds in cash linked to the group.

 

In total 20 other criminals have been jailed as part of the sophisticated investigation which has snared £3.5million worth of drugs destined for the streets.

 

The focus of the latest court hearings was 30-year-old Zaheer Hussain who was found to be running the organised crime group who were importing and distributing heroin in Birmingham.

 

Officers will now be using powers under the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) to recoup money the gang made and put it back into the public purse.

Shed burglars stabbed homeowner with screwdriver

Thieves stabbed a homeowner in the stomach with a screwdriver after he disturbed them breaking into his shed.

 

But it's believed one of the teen burglars − who stole lengths of copper piping during the burglary in West Heath's Willetts Road − may have been bitten by the resident's pet dog as he fled and police are now appealing for help to trace him.

Hundreds turn out for Jaswant Kaur’s Funeral

Hundred’s of mourners have turned out for the funeral of a well respected member of the community. Mata Jaswant Kaur Digpal died on the 8th December at Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital at the age of 105.

The funeral was held at a Gudwara in Hallam Street in Balsall Heath with her casket being ridden to Perry Barr Crematorium. Jaswant leaves behind an astonishing 302 members of family; of which 48 are grandchildren, 145 great-grandchildren and 101 great-great grandchildren.

Restaurant worker jailed for battering boss to death

A restaurant worker who stabbed and battered his boss to death has been jailed for life after pleading guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

 

Fausto Graciano was also given a hospital order at Birmingham Crown Court yesterday (13 December) for killing business owner and family man Amarjit Singh Rai earlier this year.

Thirty two people due in court over EDL protest violence

Thirty two men will appear in court next week to be sentenced after violence erupted at an English Defence League demonstration in Walsall last year.

 

Over a period of four days the defendants will all appear at Wolverhampton Crown Court for their final hearing, after being convicted of violent disorder earlier this year.

A gang of baby-faced thugs – including one just aged just 13 – have been banned from two Birmingham neighbourhoods for causing anti-social behaviour on the streets of Washwood Heath and Bordesley Green.
