Blue Jays sign Patterson to minor-league deal

The Toronto Blue Jays signed speedy outfielder Corey Patterson and five other players to minor-league contracts with invitations to spring training Tuesday.

Patterson, 31, batted .269 with eight home runs, 32 RBIs and 21 stolen bases in 90 games for the Baltimore Orioles last season. The Atlanta, Georgia has hit .253 with 112 homers, 395 RBIs and 205 stolen bases in 1,097 career games over 11 seasons.

He'll likely compete for a backup role in the outfield.

Right-handers Winston Abreu and Brian Stokes, lefties Sean Henn and Mike Hinckley, and catcher Ryan Budde were also signed to compete for jobs and boost the organization's depth.

Stokes, 31, pitched in 16 games for the Los Angeles Angels last season, posting an 8.10 earned-run average in 16 2/3 innings. He also made 13 appearances for triple-A Salt Lake, going 1-1 with a 3.78 ERA.

Abreu, 33, spent last season in the Tampa Bay Rays system, going 0-4 with a 2.28 ERA in 51 relief outings for triple-A Durham.

Henn, 29, remains with the Blue Jays after going 3-4 with two saves and a 4.73 ERA in 38 games, nine of them starts, for triple-A Las Vegas.

Hinckley, 28, was originally a third-round draft pick of the Montreal Expos in 2001. He was a combined 1-5 with a 3.86 ERA in 30 games, one start, for double-A Bowie and triple-A Norfolk in the Orioles system.

Budde, 31, played 53 games with Salt Lake last season (.244, one homer, 13 RBIs) and six more for the Angels (.400, one homer, three RBIs).
