Texas Rangers Hires Brandon Webb, Source Says

Texas Rangers Hires Brandon Webb, Source Says Share

According to a source Sunday, free-agent right hander Brandon Webb signed a one-year deal with the Texas Rangers.

Report said that by February, the 31-year old Cy Young Award winner Webb will be playing with the Rangers on its open spring training before it competes for a spot in a wide-open rotation.

Webb, was removed from the game for four straight years because of a fractured shoulder after winning the Cy Young Award and becoming one of the top starters in the NL for a four-year period with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Webb only had a surgery in August last year, which was performed by the Rangers team doctor Keith Meister.

Ahead of the contract signing, there had been speculations on who will hire Webb once he gets back in shape. Aside from the Rangers, Chicago Cubs and Washington Nationals were rumored to be the most interested in signing Webb. After signing with the Rangers, Webb became the second veteran to have signed a contract within the past four days, following the 41-year old left-handed reliever Arthur Rhodes. However, neither general manager Jon Daniels nor manager Ron Washington wants to comment on both issues.

For the next wide open rotation, Webb is expected to compete with the other top candidates like the 24-year old Rangers' starting pitcher Tommy Hunter, Derek Holland, Scott Feldman, Matt Harrison and Michael Kirkman. On the other hand, reports said that aside from C.J. Wilson and Colby Lewis, there are no other qualified starting spots for the reigning American League champions.
