Wolverines Hires Baltimore's Defensive Coordinator Greg Mattison Share

Reports said Wednesday that Michigan Wolverines hired Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Greg Mattison for the same position.

John Harbaugh, head coach of the Ravens, said in a statement that Mattison is excited to be back in Michigan. He said that they were disappointed to lose a guy like Greg. However, he said that they cannot put Mattison away from his true love, referring to the Wolverines.

Wolverines' head coach Brady Hoke is likewise excited to work with his close friend Greg, saying that the latter was one of the top defensive coordinators in football. The two had previously worked together at Michigan, with Hoke as the defensive ends coach and Mattison as the defensive coordinator. Hoke said in an interview that Mattison will always be an asset to the team's program and will always be an excellent addition to their staff.

Aside from Mattison, Michigan also hired several other staff including offensive coordinator Al Borges, special teams coordinator Dan Ferrigno, offensive line coach Darrell Funk, wide receivers coach Jeff Hecklinski, linebackers coach Mark Smith and strength and conditioning coach Aaron Wellman. Also in the news, longtime Michigan running backs coach Fred Jackson has been rehired to the same position.

Meanwhile, the 61-year old defensive coordinator previously worked at Michigan during the 1995 and 1996 seasons before working at Notre Dame for the same position. He then joined the Florida Gators in 2005, where he spent three seasons. On 2009, he was hired at Baltimore Ravens, where he replaced the former defensive coordinator Rex Ryan.
