Molby calls for patience with Rodgers

Former Liverpool midfielder Jan Molby believes the club have made progress under Brendan Rodgers but also insisted rebuilding the club would be a long-term project.

Liverpool fell to their sixth defeat of the season against Stoke earlier in the week and have already dropped 35 points thus far.

Former manager Roy Hodgson had the exact same record albeit having led the side for an extra two games before being sacked in January 2011.

Molby, however, has seen positive signs at the club and cautioned against making a hasty judgement on Rodgers' tenure.

"I'm firmly in the camp of those who believe that progress is being made," Molby told the Liverpool Echo.

"Of course we want to see more evidence of that as results don't quite reflect that. But in general performances have been good.

"We went into this season knowing that a lack of goals was always going to be a problem and so it has proved. Manchester United show you what firepower can do. They concede so many goals but they still win games because they score so many.

"We all knew this was a long-term project Rodgers took on and I expect Liverpool to improve in the second half of the season.

"The manager has always said it will take time and he's going to need another two or three transfer windows to get the squad the way he wants it."

The Reds next take on QPR on Sunday and can expect an easy outing as the Rangers have only picked up a solitary win. But Molby warns against complacency as any team fighting for their survival will likely produce a stern test.

"QPR are fighting for their lives. It might not even be 2013 yet but they are running out of games if they want to stay in the Premier League.

"If you win at Loftus Road, people will say 'big deal, you were expected to beat the bottom club'. And if you don't get the victory then it will be looked upon as a really bad result.

"They do have some ability and Harry Redknapp will have them fired up but they are down there for a reason."
