Welbeck: Newcastle are no pushovers

Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck believes his side will be given a stern test when they take on Newcastle United despite the Magpies' poor form of late.

The Red Devils have been in good form recently, picking up a respectable total of 25 points in their last 10 games, and Sir Alex Ferguson's men currently find themselves top of the Premier League table on 43 points, four points clear of nearest challengers Manchester City.

In contrast, Newcastle have been nothing short of woeful, picked up a mere 10 points from their last 10 games, and the St James Park-based outfit find themselves 14th in the table on 20 points going into their game against United on Wednesday.

Despite Newcastle's recent poor form, Welbeck claims the Magpies are still a quality side and urged his team-mates not to underestimate them.

The 22-year-old told United Review: "They've found it a bit tougher this year but I know they've had some injuries, which have played a part.

"You can still see potential throughout their team.

"They have some real attacking threats - everyone knows about players like Demba Ba and Papiss Cissé.

"All I can do is watch their games, look for any weaknesses and then do some damage on the pitch if I get the chance."

Welbeck also weighed in on the much debated issue of the lack of a winter break in the Premier League.

"I suppose the worst part is that you have to spend Christmas night in a hotel and aren't with your family," Welbeck mused.

"I don't think people really see that side of things.

"But the players look forward to the festive period because the games come thick and fast and, if you have a good run of results, you can be in a really strong position come the new year."

United and Newcastle played out a 1-1 draw the last time both teams clashed at Old Trafford, with Javier Hernandez and Demba Ba on target that day.
