In 1998, Johnson & Johnson acquired The DePuy Companies, which is a franchise of neuroscience and orthopedic companies that make up a portion of the Johnson & Johnson medical devices & diagnostics group. DePuy markets and develops various products under the Mitek, Codman, DePuy spine and orthopedic brands. DePuy Mitek distributes products used for the treatment of soft tissue injuries in sports medicine. Codman manufactures products for surgical treatment of the central nervous system and neurological disorders. DePuy spine products are dedicated to the correction of spinal deformities and to facilitate fusion of the spine which preserves its motion and also the repair of fractured bones. DePuy Orthopaedics manufactures, markets and designs products for reconstructing and repairing traumatic skeletal injuries and other products for diseased or damaged joints. In Fall 2009, DePuy decided to discontinue ASR XL Acetabular Head System and DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing Platform.

On August 24, 2010, a voluntary DePuy ASR hip recall was announced by DePuy for all ASR Hip Resurfacing Platform and ASR XL Acetabular Head Systems sold since 2003 because research released by the National Joint Registry concluded high rates of hip failure were found in the ASR XL and ASR hip resurfacing systems. Studies have proved that 12 to 13 percent failure rates were found in the systems which are over the medical standards allowance and, as a result, patients may need to undergo a revision or second surgery. It is estimated that 93,000 people have undergone DePuy hip replacement surgery and suffered side effects, such as dislocation in the hip and painful swelling. Total hip replacement complications have led to thousands of people worldwide suffering from the hip replacement. DePuy Orthopaedics has released a notice stating that over 11,500 individuals who have the ASR hip replacement system will need surgery to replace or remove the system due to the DePuy ASR hip recall.

If you or a loved one is suffering from infection, pain, tissue damage or the need for a second surgery due to a defective hip replacement , you may be eligible for financial compensation. To find out if you have a case and to get all your questions answered, contact DePuy attorneys as soon as possible.
